Regency

George III went mad. From 1811 to 1820, the future George IV ruled as Regent for the king. “Regency architecture” is a modern term loosely related to a division of Georgian architecture and design favoured during the Regency, but in fact in fashion from the 1790s to the early Victorian 1840s. It includes “the Williamane period”.

Regency style (1811-1830) was to some extent a reaction by young architects against traditional 'classicism' which they regarded as an incorrect interpretation of Greek and Roman design. They introduced the Greek Revival style which they regarded as a purer form of Classicism. In contrast to that, designers also refined Classical details rather than replicate them exactly. Fluted pilasters often replaced complete columns and many Classical details became purely decorative motifs. A classical exterior might have interiors in modern Rococo design.
