Courtfield Road

Courtfield Road was built on land belonging to the Alexander Estate.

J.R. and W.H. Roberts built the houses Nos. 15a – 47 (odd) on the south side of Courtfield Road in 1880-82.  The took over a building agreement granted by the Alexander estate to Charles and William Alden.  The Aldens had entered into an agreement to develop most of the estate but had apparently thought better of it.

An interesting and novel feature of these houses was their ‘back to front’ layout with the main rooms and elevation facing over the gardens at the rear.  The architect was Walter Graves, who worked on many projects with the Roberts.  The houses were built in 1880-82.
