Southwell Gardens

Southwell Gardens runs west of Gloucester Road.

On the south side is the parish church of St Stephen.

The north side consists mainly of five-storey terraced houses (plus basement).

Southwell Gardens was a new road built in 1871 on land belonging to the Alexander Estate.  The estate entered into an agreement with John Wilkins to develop this area. He was already building in Cornwall Gardens, so for him it was a logical move south.

He built Nos. 1-11 Southwell Gardens on the north side in 1871-3.  In 1873-4 Wilkins began work on the south side.  Here Nos. 12-14 formed a small terrace and Nos. 15-16 were joined semi-detached houses.

Most of the houses were built in white brick with some stucco decorated.  There is a dentil cornice between the fourth and fifth floors.  The central and end houses of the terraces stand slightly forward and have pediments over the first floor central windows.
